Dr. Andy Harcourt of the Center for Sports Medicine at Baldwin & Joint will be presenting “Maximizing Performance for Endurance Events” on January 14, 2010, as part of Providence Hospital’s Ask the Expert series. Those attending will learn the following:
• Optimal nutrition tips for peak training and performance for endurance events
• Simple techniques for working optimal nutrition into daily eating habits
• Effective training strategies designed to increase endurance
• Steps that decrease injury commonly associated with endurance training

“Ideal training spot for primary care sports medicine”
Daphne, AL (August 25, 2009) – The Center for Sports Medicine at Baldwin Bone and Joint in Daphne is a highly regarded facility in the field of sports medicine. In 2008, the University of South Alabama College of Medicine recognized its excellence and selected the center to provide clinical education for physicians seeking fellowship training in primary care sports medicine. The program is now beginning its second year.
Drs. John Todd and Drew Corbett are fellowship-trained in sports medicine. That means they’re specially trained to tackle issues related to sports conditioning, injury prevention, diagnosis, physical therapy and surgery. Through this fellowship program, they become USA Clinical Adjunct Professors sharing their expertise with physicians looking to further their training in the field of sports medicine.
Dr. Mike Linder, Director of Sports Medicine in Primary Care at USA, says Baldwin Bone and Joint is the ideal training spot for primary care sports medicine. “I had met both doctors; their clinical background attracted me. I had respect for their training. Their personality and ability to work with people is what sold me on them.”

The program is the first accredited fellowship program in primary care sports medicine offered south of Birmingham and Dr. Will Burkhalter is the physician selected to participate in the 2009-2010 program. Dr. Burkhalter began his fellowship training with Baldwin Bone and Joint in early August. He completed his Family Practice Residency in 2008 at the University of South Alabama. The past year, Dr. Burkhalter has worked as a Hospitalist Physician with Hospital Physician Services of Central Alabama. (Photo: Dr. Will Burkhalter)
“We are honored to be a part of this incredible program for a second year,” says Dr. John Todd. “Dr. Corbett and I are pleased to welcome Dr. Burkhalter to the practice.”
Dr. Burkhalter says he’s looking forward to this in-depth training. “This clinic offers a lot of variety in the types of sports medicine problems we see. The physicians here are excellent teachers and are very focused on teaching me the non-operative aspects of sports medicine.”
In addition to training with Drs. Todd and Corbett, Dr. Burkhalter will also be spending time with physiatrist Dr. Leslie Rush. Dr. Burkhalter will provide patient care at Baldwin Bone and Joint under the direct supervision of Drs. Todd, Corbett and Rush as part of his continued education.

| Offering Cutting-Edge Treatments…. Without the Cutting Tuesday, July 07, 2009Daphne, Alabama (July 7, 2009) - When it comes to back pain, surgery should be a last resort option. Fortunately, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physicians are skilled in the non-surgical treatment of back pain.
As a specialist in Musculoskeletal Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Physiatrist Dr. Leslie Rush with Canale Spine Institute, has the expertise in back pain to help patients find relief. “We look for non-operative solutions for our patients,” explains Dr. Rush. “As a result, pain management and rehabilitation physicians have taken the lead in performing many of the more advanced, non-surgical procedures to relieve pain.”
For example, Dr. Rush says it’s rare that patients need surgery to treat a herniated disc. He says, in most cases, it is not the disc itself causing the pain. Instead, the pain comes from a nerve rubbing the herniated disc. The nerve then becomes inflamed and swollen. A successful non-surgical treatment involves steroid injections. Dr. Rush offers the latest method of providing this treatment called fluoroscopically guided steroid injections. Using x-ray technology, Dr. Rush can apply the steroid shot directly to the source of the pain. This technology has improved injection accuracy and has reduced the need for repeated treatments. (Photo: Dr. Leslie Rush)
"My goal is to decrease the pain. I want to break that cycle of inflammation,” explains Dr. Rush. “The body is constantly trying to heal itself. So when we put the corticosteroid precisely where the nerve is inflamed, it makes the swelling go down and the nerve can again move freely over the disc.” Not only does the injection relieve the pain, it also speeds the healing process increasing the odds for long term relief.
For more information about non-surgical treatment options, contact Dr. Leslie Rush at Canale Spine Institute at Baldwin Bone & Joint, P.C. Contact the Daphne office at (251) 625-2663 or the Mobile office at (251) 445-8663. |

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than one million workers suffer back injuries each year. Too often these people are told “living with the pain” is their only option. Fellowship trained spine surgeon Dr. Paul Canale and the medical staff of the Canale Spine Institute are expanding their reach hoping to help more people return to a more active, pain-free life.
The Canale Spine Institute offers Diagnostic Evaluation, Surgical and Non-Surgical Treatment Options, Personalized Physical Therapy Program, Interventional Spine Procedures, Complex and Revision Spine Surgery and Scoliosis Treatment. Canale Spine Institute patients say, above all, Dr. Canale and his staff offer hope for a better quality of life.
Complex spine surgery patient, 49-year-old Gloria Byrne, talks about her life before seeing Dr. Canale. “My quality of life was… there was no quality of life. I had completely given up,” she says. “I was going to pain specialists having epidurals. I’ve had 20 epidurals and they never did a thing for me.” Byrne underwent complex spine surgery with Dr. Canale in February of 2008. “When I came to see Dr. Canale, I saw his assistant and she looked at the MRI and she said you have ruptured discs, we can fix this and I began to cry.” Today Gloria Byrne is able to live an active life without pain.
